A hard-boiled, often serious movie type, evolved from film noir, in which a loose-cannon police detective tracks down a killer or outlaw by his own often unconventional means. Although these films can often have unexpected or even negative outcomes, they should not be confused with film noirs, which adhere to a stricter set of stylistic standards.
