Feel Like Going Home
Description by Mark Deming

Martin Scorsese kicked off his series of documentaries on blues music with this film (directed by Scorsese himself) which follows contemporary blues artist Corey Harris as he travels to the deep South to see where the blues first took root and meets some legendary musicians, and then journeys to Mali to explore the African roots of the music. Feel Like Going Home has been transferred to disc in letterboxed format at the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1, and the audio is presented in two mixes, a surround mix in Dolby Digital 5.1 and a two-channel mix in uncompressed PCM stereo. Both sound and image are of superb quality, and the new performances staged for this film are shot with unobtrusive intelligence. Most of the performances and interviews are in English, with no multiple language options, while the sequences in Mali feature burned-in English subtitles. Bonus material includes six additional musical performances, an onscreen interview with Scorsese in which he discusses his film and his passion for music, a text biography and filmography for the filmmaker, a menu option which allows users to access individual musical performances, and a trailer for the series The Blues: A Musical Journey. This is a fine release that treats its material with the respect it truly deserves.
