Disney and Pixar hit another home run (after Toy Story, Toy Story 2, and A Bug's Life) with the charming and smart Monsters, Inc. And while the DVDs for those films were remarkable, this one is certainly as good. The first thing that must be mentioned is the image. To say it's stunning might be an understatement. Transferred directly from the original source, it's presented in both anamorphic 1.78:1 and a full-frame transfer that was repositioned for televisions, and it's amazing. Colors, such an integral part of the film's look, are vibrant. Detail, as would be expected, is perfect, with sharp lines and no distracting elements. The sound, presented in a 5.1 Dolby Digital EX track, is also impressive. Surrounds are often aggressive, utilizing the entire sound field, while dialogue is clear and distortion free. It is obvious the right people were assembled to produce this disc. That is also evident in the supplements, which while not perfect, are certainly abundant. The two main features of the first movie disc are a 5.1 EX track for sound effects only, and more importantly, a commentary track from director Peter Docter, co-director Lee Ulkrich, and executive producers John Lasseter and Andrew Stanton. The second disc is where most of the extras are housed. As mentioned, there are plenty of them, but portions of this second disc seem a little weak. This disc consists of two doors, the Human World and the Monster World. In addition, on the main menu are seven minutes of outtakes shown in theaters, a new short film called Mike's New Car, and the Oscar-winning short For the Birds. In the Human World door is a plethora of short, often no more than a few minutes, featurettes on everything from character design to galleries and the original story treatment (the longest at just over 13 minutes). This section also includes posters, trailers, television spots, toys, and the outtakes (again). In the Monster World, which will appeal more to children, there are three main sections, "New Monster Adventures," which includes a music video, cute game for kids, story time, and Mike's New Car, again. The second section is "Behind the Screams" which includes the outtakes (for the third time). The final section is "Orientation," which includes the history of the monster world, monster of the month gallery, scarer cards, and more. Obviously repetition is present, and while that doesn't ruin the experience, it also seems a little unnecessary. Regardless, this is an outstanding disc that compares to any special edition produced. |
