Gunman in the Streets
Description by Derek Hill

Considered a "lost" film since it had never been shown theatrically or available on home video in the United States, Gunman in the Streets is a tough-as-nails noir set in Paris starring Dane Clark as a fugitive on the run from the cops. Of course, he gets a little help from his girlfriend played by Simone Signoret. As directed by Frank Tuttle -- who was no neophyte when it came to hard-boiled films, having made This Gun for Hire and The Glass Key both starring Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake -- Gunman is a relentless thriller that should more than please fans of great film noir. And thanks to the folks at All Day Entertainment, Gunman has been fully restored. When originally released in England, where this print comes from, British censors demanded some cuts to the film (ex. a scene of Clark shooting a gendarme during the opening shootout, Clark extracting a bullet from his arm, and other scenes). The previously excised scenes have been reintegrated back into the film, although you can see all of the cut footage on its own as an extra on the disc as well. The disc presents the film in its proper full-screen aspect ratio (1.33:1) and has been digitally remastered from a fine grain 35 mm print. The picture is fine, although it's not always in the best of shape. The English mono soundtrack also contains some noise and hiss underlying some of the dialogue, but it's nothing too intrusive. When it comes to unearthing previously lost treasures, you have to take what you get. The disc also contains a photo gallery of advertising art and photos, production notes, and more. All Day's DVD is overall excellent and continues the company's mission in releasing obscure and outré cinema to a wider audience. Gunman joins Wanted for Murder, Edgar G. Ulmer's Strange Illusion, and a fabulous disc of film noir trailers called Pulp Cinema in All Day's pulp cinema series. Let's hope that more obscure treasures will likewise see the light of day from this company.
