In 1942, he attended a chemical weapons defense school and served in the military on the Caucasian front. Following the war, Karasik graduated from Moscow's VGIK in 1951 after studying film direction under Sergei Gerasimov. Karasik directed his first feature film, Zhdite Pisem/Wait for Letters, in 1960. In addition to directing, Karasik contributes on occasion to screenplays for other directors. He has worked at Mosfilm Studios since 1963.
