Polish animator/director Wladislaw Starewicz is best known for his innovative work with stop-motion puppets. Before getting involved in the Moscow film industry in 1912, he was a bookkeeper and an art student. Following the Russian Revolution, he moved to France to continue making films, several of which earned international awards. In France, he was occasionally billed as Ladislas Starevitch.
