biography
A former photographer, newspaper reporter, and playwright, William P.S. Earle became an important director for Vitagraph in the mid-1910s, directing "features only," as an official 1921 studio bio boasted. Switching to Famous Players/Paramount and Selznick later in the decade, Earle went on to direct mainly potboilers, including four starring Broadway import Elaine Hammerstein, and Destiny's Isle (1922), a desert island romance which he also produced. Earle was married to actress Blanche Earle and Evangeline Russell, the widow of pioneering producer J. Stuart Blackton.
