biography
A hauntingly beautiful German actress, brunette Wera Engels was entirely misused by Hollywood producers who only saw her as a bargain-basement version of Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich. Under contract to RKO, Engels found herself lent to such Poverty Row entrepreneurs as Walter Futter and M.H. Hoffman, whose productions were fodder for the neighborhood grind-houses. She'd had enough by 1935 and returned to Germany. Engels was at one point the wife of yet another Hollywood import, the Lithuanian-born Ivan Lebedeff.
