Already a stage veteran when she made her screen debut with Vitagraph in 1916, Virginia Hammond had appeared opposite E.H. Sothern in If I Were King and Our American Cousin. A rather young character actress, Hammond mainly played society ladies onscreen, continuing her career well into the sound era. She retired on a high note, playing Lady Montague (as she had many times in Shakespearian stock) in MGM's lavish version of Romeo and Juliet (1936).
