Though not a prolific filmmaker, Tadeusz Chmielewski ranks among Poland's best comedy directors. After graduating from the Lodz Film School in 1954, Chmielewski spent several years as an assistant director before making an auspicious directorial debut with the comedy Ewa Chce Spac/Ewa Wants to Sleep in 1957. As with all his subsequent films, Chmielewski co-wrote the screenplay. Between 1983 and 1987, the director acted as vice chairman of the Polish Film Makers Association. In 1984, Chmielewski accepted an appointment as the artistic director of the Oko film unit.
