For her many contributions to Soviet cinema, screenwriter/director Vera Stroyeva received the honorary title "People's Artist of the Russian Federation." A graduate of the Institute of Theatrical Art in her native Kiev, Stroyeva wrote her first screenplays in 1925. Five years later, she began directing in collaboration with her husband, Grigori Roshal. One of their most notable co-productions was Petersburg Nights, an adaptation of a Dostoyevsky novel.
