biography
Russian filmmaker Roman Balayan earned a degree in direction from the Yerevan Arts and Theater Institute in 1964 and later studied his craft under Timofey Levchuk at Kiev's Institute of Theater Art until 1969. Before becoming a director, Balayan had spent two years as a professional actor. As a director, he initially worked in television during the early '70s and did not make his first feature film, Biryuk/Lone Wolf, until 1977. Balayan has made most of his films at the Dovzhenko Film Studios in Kiev.
