Robert S. Baker was initiated into the British film industry as an assistant director in 1937. After serving as a combat cameraman in World War II, Baker returned to his A.D. activities, then in 1948 formed Tempean films with fellow wartime photographer Monty S. Berman. His first full-fledged directorial credit was Blackout (1950), followed by such moody melodramas as 13 East Street (1952), The Steel Key (1953), Jack the Ripper (1959), Siege of Sidney St (1961), Hellfire Club (1961). He also produced the works of other directors (Blood of the Vampire Flesh and the Fiends etc.). In 1962, Baker and Berman inaugurated the internationally popular TV adventure series The Saint, which ran until 1967. Robert S. Baker went on to develop such video espionagers as The Baron and Department S.
