Perhaps best-remembered as the first deputy director of the BBC (established in 1922), Cecil Lewis also wrote screenplays and occasionally directed feature films. As a screenwriter, he is known for working on the non-musical version of George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion (1938). Lewis made his directorial and screenwriting debut with a dramatic adaptation of Bizet's most famous opera, Carmen, in 1931.
