Spanish filmmaker Luis Marquina entered the film industry in 1933 when he began studying film sound recording at Paris' Tobis Studios and at Berlin's UFA. In 1934, Marquina returned to Madrid to work as a sound engineer at CEA Studios. Marquina made his directorial debut the following year with Don Quintín el Armargao/The Embittered Don Quintín. The film was produced by Luis Buñuel; years later, Buñuel remade the film in Mexico. Marquina weathered the Spanish Civil War in Argentina; later, in 1955, he founded his own production company, P.C. Día.
