Handsome, debonair William Clifford toured with stage luminaries Robert B. Mantell and Walker Whiteside prior to making his screen debut with the San Antonio-based Méliès company in 1911. He played Travis in The Immortal Alamo (1911) and went on to co-star with nearly all the leading ladies of his day. His screen career lasted until the advent of sound. Returning to the legitimate stage, Clifford later turned up in the 1935 Broadway revival of The Taming of the Shrew, opposite Jacqueline de Wit and Sydney Greenstreet.
