Biography by AllMovie

American avant-garde artist and filmmaker Man Ray, born Emmanuel Rudnitsky in Philadelphia, founded the New York Dada movement. He started out working with painting and photographs, but turned to experimenting with film in the '20s while working in Paris. His chief innovation was making films without a camera by placing outlines of objects in motion directly on the film stock and exposing it to light.
