Orlan is the radical French artist responsible for the Carnal Art movement, which seeks to open the debate about surgical body modification in an advanced consumer capitalist society obsessed with unattainable beauty standards. Since her first piece, entitled Operation Opera, Orlan has been using her own body as a medium by undergoing a series of plastic surgeries staged as performance art. Her ongoing evolution is aimed at transforming her body based on classical beauty ideals from the history of Western art, along with images created from her own imagination and software.
