biography
Distinguished cinematographer Nicolas Vogel worked at MGM studios for most of his career and was particularly noted for his excellent black-and-white photography, a medium he used exclusively until the mid-'50s. He entered the film industry in the mid-'20s and but for a couple of assignments as a director of photography in 1927, did not become a full-fledged cinematographer until the late '30s. In 1947, Vogel became in demand after he photographed Lady in the Lake. In 1949, he earned an Oscar for his work on Battleground. His brother, Joseph R. Vogel, became president of MGM.
