A dark, brooding character actor in silent films, Milton Ross had studied to become a minister prior to going on-stage in the 1880s. A typical touring company actor, Ross went on to appear opposite Mary Mannering (in Janice Meredith), Melbourne McDowell, and even James O'Neil until he was persuaded to enter films with the New York Motion Picture Company in 1915. He later became a member of William S. Hart's stock company, playing Deacon Doyle in Truthful Tolliver (1916), "Admiral" Bates in The Narrow Trail (1917), and Reb Butler in Riddle Gawne (1919). In the 1920s, he was the judge in The Virginian (1923) and Don Manuel in Man From God's Country. He should not be confused with a Milton Ross who appeared in a few films in the late '40s.
