biography
A popular Broadway comedienne who had sparkled in several editions of the Ziegfeld Follies and in The Grass Widow, May Hopkins (sometimes her first name was given as Mae) appeared in only a handful of films, but to judge from the extant Bolshevism on Trial (1919), made her every moment count. She was singled out by several reviewers for her brief comedy turn in this Red Scare melodrama and enjoyed good roles opposite both Will Rogers and Tom Mix, and it remains a mystery why her screen career never really took off. Of Norwegian parentage, Hopkins at various times listed Bergen, Norway, and Princeton, NJ, as her birthplace.
