biography
On stage from the age of four, pretty Mary Lawlor reached the zenith of rah-rah college hijinks as one of the vivacious co-eds performing the "Varsity Drag" in DeSylva, Brown, and Henderson's 1927 Broadway hit Good News. She recreated her role as Connie in the 1930 MGM screen version, but by then musicals had fallen out of favor with the moviegoing public and some of the best songs, including "Lucky in Love," had been removed. The musical comedy's nominal lead, Lawlor found herself severely upstaged by an invigorated Bessie Love, fresh from Broadway Melody (1929), and her only subsequent screen assignment was Shooting Straight (1930), a standard underworld melodrama with Richard Dix.
