Singer/actress Martha Eggerth never made it big in Hollywood, but she was quite popular in Europe in the 1930s, particularly in Germany and Austria. She was born in Budapest and began appearing on stage when she was 11. After she'd become established on stage she starred in many filmed operettas. Eventually she and her husband, the noted Polish tenor Jan Kiepura, moved to the U.S. Kiepura co-starred in most of her European films. During the early 1940s, Eggerth worked in two Judy Garland musicals. Receiving few offers after that, she returned to Europe after WW II and continued starring in films. Following her retirement, Eggerth moved to New York City.
