Multi-talented Hungarian performer Lya de Putti, the daughter of a baron and a countess, started her career dancing in Budapest music halls. Eventually she went to Berlin to dance classical ballet and from there broke into German films. Among her most famous German films was Dupont's 1925 film Variety. She came to Hollywood in 1926 and appeared in films through the decade. She also appeared in one British film in 1929. Two years later she died of pneumonia following an operation in a New York hospital.
