By 1989, director Liliana Cavani had made ten feature films and seven documentaries for RAI, Italian television. She went to work for the national network in the mid 1960s, soon after graduating from the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome. Most of Cavani's feature films are based on fictional historical or mythological characters. In I Cannibali (1969), she used the myth of Antigone to present the contemporary political state of Italy.
