A pretty brunette starlet, Los Angeles native Kay Hughes (born Catherine Rhoads) is often confused with the equally dark-haired Carol Hughes, who had begun her screen career in 1932 as Kay Hughes. It was Carol Hughes who appeared in Columbia two-reel comedies and later played Dale Arden in the second Flash Gordon serial. Kay Hughes, meanwhile, danced in a couple of MGM films and had a minor supporting role in William Wellman's Robin Hood of Eldorado (1936) prior to signing with small-scale Republic Pictures. Hughes co-starred in two action serials and four B-Westerns, all produced within six months. Her agent pressed her into switching to more upscale Universal, but that studio only assigned her yet another serial. By 1945, she was making low-budget Westerns at PRC and retired to raise her family.
