Slovakian filmmaker and actor Juraj Herz began directing films in 1965 with Sberne Survosti/The Junk Shop (1965). Herz initially studied photography at an art school in Bratislava from 1951 to 1954. He then enrolled at Prague's film school, DAMU, to study puppetry. Following his graduation in 1958, Herz worked in Prague as a director and actor in the theater. In 1961, he joined the Barrandov Film Studio and five years later made his directorial debut with Sberne Surovosti/The Junk Shop (1965). In addition to a prolific career as a director, Herz often appears as an actor in the films of others.
