biography
Joyce Gates was a model and an actress who appeared on-stage and briefly upon the screen during the 1940s. Born Joyce Ruth Getz in Chicago but raised in New York, she started out in the early '40s as a model for the Conover Agency. There she and colleague Lauren Bacall became friends. Prior to modeling, Gates had gained some experience on the stage. At age 18, Gates came to Hollywood. She made her film debut in the early '40s and went on to appear in a few movies, including Summer Storm (1944). In 1945, Gates married producer Jules Buck. When McCarthyism cast its pall upon Hollywood during the early '50s, the couple moved to Europe. Years after she returned to the U.S., Gates became a successful interior decorator in Southern California.
