Czech director and screenwriter Jaromil Jires makes films in a variety of genres. His most important contribution to his country's cinema was Perlicky N Dne/Pearls of the Deep (1965), a seminal work that has been called the "manifesto" of the Czech New Wave. Jires originally studied film administration at the Industrial Film School at Cimelice; he went on to study at Prague's FAMU, where he received degrees in photography in 1958, and film direction in 1960. In addition to his features, Jires frequently works in television.
