Jack Davies learned the rudiments of British screen comedy as a staff writer on the Will Hay films of the 1930s. Not confined to any one comic style, Davies was as well suited to the whimsy of Laughter in Paradise (1951) as he was to the semi-satirical silliness of the Doctor in the House series and the gut-level slapstick of Norman Wisdom's vehicles. In 1965, he earned an Oscar nomination for his work on the all-star Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines. Jack Davies was the father of child star (and later BBC TV director) John Howard Davies.
