American cinematographer Peverell Marley joined the film industry soon after his high-school graduation as a worker for Famous Players-Lasky. By the time he was 22, he had already assisted with the filming of De Mille's 1923 version of The Ten Commandments. He continued working on many other early De Mille epics; during the sound era, he began working for others at MGM, Fox, and Warners where he was noted for his technical craftsmanship.
