biography
Filmmaker Helena Nogueira created South Africa's first full-length feature film to be directed by a woman with 1988's Quest for Truth/Quest for Love. The Mozambique-born Nogueira came to South Africa during her native country's tumultuous bid for independence. She graduated in music, speech, and drama from the University of Natal. While still a student there, she directed two films, Visages and Bollod of the Walsungs. She then went on to study film at the Paris Institut des hautes Etudes Cinematographiques in 1980.
