biography
Best known for her beautifully wrought, tragicomic stories of contemporary women's lives, writer Grace Paley divided her time between prose writing and social activism. Her work -- which totaled four dozen stories and appeared in three collections over the course of Paley's 84 years -- was adapted for the screen in the 1982 film Enormous Changes at the Last Minute. Three acclaimed female filmmakers -- Mirra Bank, Muffie Meyer, and Ellen Hovde -- joined forces with adapters Susan Rice and John Sayles to create an omnibus film based on three tales by Paley. The feature premiered to critical kudos in 1983; it starred Kevin Bacon and Ellen Barkin.
