British cinematographer Gilbert Taylor started out at age 15 as a camera assistant. He did not become a full-fledged lighting director until the late '40s. Back then he was known for his facility with both color and black-and-white photography and his versatility. Excellent examples of Taylor's work can be found in Dr. Strangelove (1964), Hard Day's Night, and MacBeth (1971). In the 1970s, Taylor began working on big-budget Hollywood films.
