Spanish filmmaker Francisco Regueiro was a major figure in the New Spanish Cinema movement of the '60s. Before becoming a director, Regueiro studied business, law, and journalism, and was honored for his short fiction. Following graduation from the Instituto de Investigaciones y Experiencias Cinematográficas in 1961, Regueiro wrote several scripts; most did not pass muster with the era's strict censors, while others remained unfilmed due to financial problems. Regueiro made his feature-film directorial debut in 1963 with El Buen Amor/The Pure Love (1963). In 1993, his film Madregilda/Mother Gilda won awards at international film festivals, including a FIPRESCI award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival and a Goya (the Spanish Oscar). In addition to his work in cinema, Regueiro is a noted fine artist.
