A veteran alumnus of the Central School of Speech and Drama in England, Surrey native Emma Barnett received further training under the aegis of instructors Mike Bernardin and James Beresford. Barnett jump-started her career by alternating between roles in BBC television productions including My Family and The Friday Night Club and theatrical roles, with a particularly noteworthy turn as Curley's Wife in a theatrical adaptation of Of Mice and Men. The thespian subsequently received international exposure with her portrayal of Mary Crusoe in the fall 2008 NBC miniseries Crusoe, adapted from Daniel Defoe's seminal novel.
