American playwright Elmer Harris wrote his first screen "original," Lottery Man, in 1919. Out of respect for his Broadway reputation, Harris was billed as "presenter" rather than producer of the 1924 production No More Women. His novel Bridge was adapted for the screen as Name the Woman in 1928, while his stage plays So Long Letty and Johnny Belinda were likewise cinematized. Dividing his time between both coasts during the 1930s, Harris kept busy on Broadway even while penning the screenplays for the likes of The Barbarian (1933), Red Salute (1935) and Let 'Em Have It (1936).
