Ellen Bruno has been actively involved in humanitarian missions in Mexico, Thailand and Cambodia as well as organizing programs in the States to aid Tibetan refugees in India. Her first two documentaries reflect these experiences. Samsara (1990) is about the efforts of Cambodians to reconstruct their country after the destruction caused by Khmers Rouges. Satya (1994) questions the non-violent resistance of the Tibetan nuns faced with religious persecution and cultural genocide orchestrated by the Chinese government. Slave Girls is about the trafficking of Burmese girls into the sex industry in Thailand.
