Prominent costume designer Elizabeth McBride specialized in re-creating the fashions of average folks from the mid-20th century, particularly Texans and Southerners. McBride launched her career in Dallas when Bruce Beresford hired her to clothe his actors in Tender Mercies (1983). In 1989, McBride received an Oscar nomination for her costumes in Driving Miss Daisy. McBride has also worked on the films Fried Green Tomatoes (1991), Thelma and Louise (1991), and The Shawshank Redemption (1994). In 1996, McBride created the fanciful costume for John Travolta's seedy archangel in Michael. Her promising career was cut short by cancer. McBride died on June 16, 1997, in Santa Fe, NM, at the age of 42.
