"Move over, Macaulay Culkin!" trumpeted columnists during the '90s ascent to stardom of American child actor Elijah Wood. This convenient journalistic bracketing ignored the fact that kiddie superstar Culkin and ten-year-old Wood had entirely different screen personalities. While Culkin was a precocious Dennis the Menace type, Wood projected a more down-to-earth, next-door-neighbor image. Besides, as the 1993 Culkin/Wood co-starring effort The Good Son revealed, Wood was actually the more versatile of the two. Making his first public impression with a small role in a Paula Abdul video, young Wood began toting up some impressive big-screen credits in such films as Back to the Future, Part II (1988), Internal Affairs (1990), and Avalon (1990). When he finally attained leads, it was, unfortunately, in such box-office disappointments as Radio Flyer (1992), The Adventures of Huck Finn (1993), and North (1994). Though certainly capable of carrying a film by himself, Wood was shown to better advantage in his co-starring stints with Mel Gibson in Forever Young (1992) and Kevin Costner in The War (1994).
