biography
Best known today for playing Officer Torch in Universal's Flash Gordon serials, American character actor Earl Leslie Askam had studied voice in Italy and appeared in numerous stage operettas prior to making his screen debut in 1930. Despite his education and stage work, however, Askam's screen career was spent mainly in action fare and Westerns. He reportedly died of a heart attack while playing golf. A brother, Perry Askam, appeared in a few films from 1930-1935.
