The son of playwright Eve Ensler, Dylan McDermott prepared for an acting career by attending New York's Neighborhood Playhouse. He acted on stage (notably Neil Simon's Biloxi Blues) before appearing as platoon leader Sgt. Franz in his first film, 1987's Hamburger Hill. McDermott later appeared as Julia Roberts' husband in the 1989 film version of Richard Harling's Steel Magnolias. One of McDermott's showiest roles was as the doomed-from-the-start partner of CIA-agent Clint Eastwood in In the Line of Fire (1993).
