American producer and director Dick Brown was a pioneer of TV animation. Toward the beginning of his career, he worked on Fonnan Phillips Country Barn Dance, starring Tennessee Ernie Ford and The Charlie Ruggles Show. Later he founded Cambria Studios which produced the first half-hour-format animated TV series Clutch Cargo in 1959; it was also the first color cartoon show and used the unique (and very bizarre) technique, Synchro-Vox. Brown continued producing shows at Cambria--most notably Space Angel (1962)--through the 1960s. He then became an executive producer for different animation companies, including Hanna-Barbera. Later he was president and CEO of the Animation Filmmakers Corporation. He died of cancer in 1993.
