A former news writer, Baltimore-born Clara Beranger began her screenwriting career in the early 1910s freelancing for Edison, Vitagraph, Kalem, and other pioneering movie producers. Briefly a staff writer with Fox (Anna Karenina [1915], A Tale of Two Cities [1917]), Beranger has been mostly associated with Famous Players-Lasky (Paramount) in general, and director William C. de Mille in particular. She wrote or contributed to more than 24 de Mille productions, including Cameo Kirby (1914) and Miss Lulu Bett (1921), and later became his second wife and the stepmother of choreographer Agnes de Mille. Clara Beranger, who also used the pseudonym of Charles S. Beranger, retired from screenwriting in 1934.
