Early French filmmaker Raymond Bernard began his film career in 1915 as an actor in Jeanne Dori, in which he appeared opposite Sarah Bernhardt. He then appeared in a few short comedies from Jacques Feyder. Bernard became a director in 1917 and was noted for his adaptations of the novels and plays of his famed father Tristan Bernard. Young Bernard first won major critical acclaim for Le Petit Café (1919) which was penned by his father and starred Max Linder. He continued directing a wide variety of films ranging from comedies to epic historical pictures until the late 1950s.
