As Larry Kent's gray-haired Irish mother in John Ford's Hangman's House (1928), Belle Stoddard had made her professional stage debut at the age of 12 and performed opposite the cream of the American theater, including Joseph Jefferson, McKee Rankin, William Gillette, and Minnie Maddern Fiske. She became a Hollywood extra following the advent of sound.
