Biography by AllMovie

Though many of filmmaker's films were considered too controversial to show in his native Iran, Beyzayie is considered a pioneer of the new Iranian cinema. He is noted for his three dimensional female characters that transcend the traditional Iranian cinema stereotypes of woman as wife or whore. He began directing in the late 1960s after joining the Center for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults with no formal cinematic training. His first films centered on the struggles of Iranian teens. He later made true-to-life movies centered around personal and psychological relationships. In 1975 he was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Teheran University where he continued making films. In 1979 the government dismissed him, and he did not begin making films again until 1985.
