Polish-born art director Anton Grot came the United States in 1909 following studies in design and illustration at the Krakow Art School and at a technical school in Koenigsberg, Germany. Grot began working as an art director for the Lubin film company in 1913 and went on to design sets for a number of major producers, including Cecil B. DeMille and Pathe. Grot began working for Warner Brothers in 1927 and remained with them until he retired 20 years later. Grot's work is noted for its realism and was at its best during the '30s and '40s. Grot is especially known for his ability to create water special effects; in 1941 he received a special Oscar for inventing a water ripple and wave-illusion machine. The result of these machines was first seen in the 1940 version of Sea Hawk.
