Bearing a strong family resemblance to his cousin Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle -- at least in girth -- this 335-pound former vaudevillian did not become a star like Roscoe but instead proved one of the early silent era's more prominent character actors. Discovered for films by producer Thomas H. Ince, Arbuckle lent his considerable presence to such popular melodramas as Harold Lockwood and May Allison's Big Tremaine (1916), Mary Pickford's The Hoodlum (1919) and, as the clergyman, D.W. Griffith's A Romance of Happy Valley (1919). Less busy in the 1920s, Arbuckle retired at the advent of sound but returned to play unbilled bit parts in the mid-'30s. He was the brother of character actor Maclyn Arbuckle.
