Comedy Drama » Political Satire
A type of satire in which political figures, leaders, beliefs, parties or an entire nation are examined and attacked. Mostly these attacks are aimed at social institutions; however, personalities can also be a target. These types of attacks can be lighthearted, humorous and whimsical, serving more as a send-up of political hypocrisy or power obsession, like The Great McGinty, The Phantom President or Dave. Others, however, can be serious, extremely cynical, and vicious. More often than not, the best of the subgenre combine both approaches, leaving audiences chuckling but also disturbed by the honesty of the material, as in Dr. Strangelove, Nashville, Bulworth and Wag the Dog. Sometimes, the form of mockumentary is used, adding touches of authenticity, as in Bob Roberts and Tanner ‘88.
